PRACTICAL TIPS FOR EXCHANGE IN LEEDS

Travelling (flights, coach, bus and trains)

There are several options to travel to and around Leeds and if you book your ticket in advance you can save tens of Euros (i recommend SAS). You can fly to Bradford, Manchester or Birmingham and then get a coach to Leeds. The University recommends Bradford airport as it’s easier to travel from there to Leeds and they also offer a meet and greet service from Leeds Bradford airport running between the hours of 09:00 and 21:00 during the week before Induction. This is a welcome service offered by current students who will meet you on arrival, guide you to the easiest method of transport to your accommodation, help you with any problems and answer your questions. To make use of this service, you will need to book a place at least 3 days in advance online. Should you find a cheap flight to Manchester (1.5hrs drive) or Birmingham (2.5/3hrs drive) you can get it but make sure you look for a coach which is usually cheaper than trains from any of the said airport to Leeds. I recommend www.uk.megabus.com they are cheaper (if you book in advance you can get as cheap as 1£ and not more than 15£) and also have free WIFI to keep you company. National Express is another option but they are bit more expensive like 4/5£ or more if booked in advance and no free WIFI. 

SAS airline Manchester-Helsinki

While in Leeds, after the induction, you are given a student card which is free and with that you can get a student discount in shops and also bus pass. Monthly bus pass is cheaper. Should you be lucky to leave in the city centre or somewhere near the University campus you might not need a bus pass as you can walk from University to almost anywhere in the city. You can also rent a bike if you wish.

The cheapest mean to get around Yorkshire or England is using coach but trains are faster and more expensive.

Living and Accommodation

The University offers accommodation to suit a range of budget open for exchange students for one semester or for a full year. You can check the different options at www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/accomodation for detail including application. The downside about the student housing is autumn semesters are longer in UK (September-February) contracts cannot usually be less than this period even if you are only staying until December and deposits are required (about 200£). Therefore, you can also check in the private market using www.unipol.leeds.ac.uk or should you know some people to get a short stay accommodation. You need to be cautious, some places are far and only specific bus service are available and you might get a cheap private accommodation but very expensive bus ticket (personal experience) and do check if rent includes heating, water etc. In addition, private housing sometimes are cheap with less distraction but if you want to experience student life in UK I recommend student halls.

Accommodations does not include beddings, pots and pans, therefore, you will need to purchase these; you can get home essentials easily in various stories like Wilko. University accommodation also sells beddings. My experience with bathroom showers and taps is they often change from warm to cold or vice versa, I find this very strange after living in Finland for some time.

Phone and Money

During the induction week, students are given a package which includes sim card, maps, hoodies, notebook/calendar, pens etc. If you arrive a week earlier you can grab yourself a sim card from any corner store, it’s cheap and with 10/15£ you can have monthly internet and free calls without having to get a contract line (ask student ambassadors the different options, they are there to help you).

It’s easy if you have all required documents to open a bank account but might take some time, therefore, I suggest you have cash; this will save you from the charges of using your bank card abroad. If you are staying for only a semester you can always arrange with someone to pay the rent on your behalf. Otherwise, almost anything you need, cash will do it for you. UK is not the cheapest of place because of the difference in currency and exchange rate so be prepared to spend.

There are many places to look for help when the need arise and during the induction week all of the key issues will be covered. Student ambassadors, international office, study advisor and other lecturers are there to help you should you need. So always reach out before it’s too late.

The good thing is the University send you a welcoming package after accepting your application and this contains all practical information you will need as a student so less worries you will survive it.

OHJEITA SAKSAAN LÄHTIJÄLLE

Kieli

Suosittelen opiskelemaan saksaa ennen vaihtoa! Syyt tähän ovat varsin ilmiselvät. Englannin taito kannattaa olla myös hallussa. Opiskelua voi jatkaa Hannover Hochschulessa oman tasonsa mukaan. Kielikeskuksessa voi tehdä kielitestin minkä avulla selviää oman kielen taso. Kielitaito auttaa sosiaalisissa tilanteissa ja jos kielitaito on tarpeeksi hyvä niin on mahdollista opiskella saksankielisiä kursseja.

Lennot

Saksaan pääsee varsin edullisesti jos muistaa ostaa liput ajoissa. Tulee halvemmaksi ostaa heti menopaluu jos tietää varmasti milloin aikoo tulla takaisin. Omat lippuni maksoivat yhteensä noin 250 euroa.

Asuminen

Asunnon löytäminen voi olla haasteellista. Minulla ei ollut vielä asuntoa kun lähdin Saksaan eikä vastaanottava koulu auttanut minua kovin aktiivisesti asian tiimoilta. Internetistä kuitenkin löytyy muutamia sivuja joiden kautta on mahdollista löytää yksiöitä, kimppakämppiä ja muita asuntoja vastaamaan omaan tarpeeseen. Asuin ensimmäisen viikon ystäväni äidin entisen työkaverin luona josta etsin sitten itselleni vakituisemman asuinpaikan. Tein ainakin 50 hakemusta sekä useita puheluita ja tekstiviestejä kunnes sain huoneen saksalaisen näyttelijän asunnosta. Parhaaksi hakusivustoksi osoittautui: http://www.wg-gesucht.de/ . Sen kautta löysin lopulta asunnon. Palveluun kannattaa tehdä profiili minkä mahdollinen vuokraaja voi lukea hakutilanteissa. Asuntojen laatu vaihtelee suuresti. Koululta kannattaa kysellä opiskelija-asuntoloiden yhteystietoja jo hyvissä ajoin. Itse asuin Linden-Nord nimisellä alueella jolla on hyvä maine. Asunto oli varsin alkeellinen ja maksoi 300 euroa kuussa mikä on kohtuullinen vuokra alueella. Asuntoasioissa ei ole varaa olla turhan nirso, mutta kannattaa aina miettiä ettei maksa silti ylihintaa.

Opinnot

Asioiden ollessa epäselviä kannattaa ottaa yhteyttä kampuksen kansainväliseen koordinaattoriin ja kansainvälisen toimiston työntekijään sekä tutoreihin. Kannattaa varmistaa keinot millä opintopisteet ansaitaan sillä sitä ei välttämättä kukaan heti kerro. Tehtäviä palauttamalla ja tentteihin osallistumalla saa pisteet ensisijaisesti. Kielikeskuksesta kannattaa tarkistaa alkavat kielikurssit hyvissä ajoin. Suosittelen myös hoitamaan rästit ja muut tehtävät ajoissa ennen vaihtoon lähtöä niin voit olla hyvillä mielin reissussa. Vaihto-opiskelijoiden on mahdollista osallistua ”study camp” nimiseen ohjelmaan ennen varsinaisten opintojen alkua. Siellä tutustutaan tutorien johdolla kaupunkiin ja tehdään yhdessä asioita.

Sosiaalisuus

Ei kannata pelästyä jos ihmiset eivät ota sinuun kontaktia. Ulkomaalaisena opiskelijana näin käy helposti. Tyrkytin itseni koulun rokkariporukkaan ja heidän kanssaan jutellessa pääsin nopeasti laajempaan kaveripiiriin. Kannattaa olla rohkea eikä lannistua mahdollisista torjunnoista. Saksalaiset ovat epävarmoja varsinkin englannin käytöstä ja tämä usein jarruttaa kontaktien luomista. Usein vaihdossa olleet ihmiset ottavat herkemmin kontaktia. Vaihto-opiskelijoille on ennen opintoja ohjelmaa jossa tutustuu muihin vaihto-opiskelijoihin ja kaupunkiin. Tutoreilta on myös mahdollista kysellä kaikesta mahdollisesta. Joka toinen viikko on myös tutorien vetämiä kansainvälisiä iltoja baareissa joissa tutustuu helposti muidenkin kampusten opiskelijoihin.

Kulttuuri

Suosittelen vahvasti tutustumaan paikalliseen ruokaan! Erilaiset makkarat ja oluet ovat Saksan erikoisuuksia. Saksalaiset ystäväni osasivat esitellä minulle kaupungin erikoisuuksia ja ruokapaikkoja mihin ei olisi omin päin osannut mennä. Hannoverista on myös helppo matkustaa muualle Saksaan ja jopa muihin Euroopan maihin. Koulussa on pakollinen lukukausimaksu joka sisältää opiskelijakortin jolla voi matkustaa kaupungin julkisilla sekä tietyillä junilla ja busseilla Ala-Saksin osavaltion sisällä. Kannattaa hyödyntää tätä mahdollisuutta. Esimerkiksi Hampuriin pääsee junalla alle kolmen tunnin. Halpabussi yhtiöt kuten ”Flix-bus” tarjoavat myös edullisia matkoja eri Saksan ja muiden maiden kaupunkeihin. Itse käytin tätä palvelua käydessäni Berliinissä ja Amsterdamissa.

VAIHTONI HANNOVER HOCHSCHULESSA

Taustatietoa

Hei! Olen Ilari Rautiainen Helsingin kampukselta. Suoritin vaihtoni 15.09 – 15.12.2015 Saksan Hannoverissa Ala-Saksin osavaltiossa. Opiskelen sosionomiksi ja tarkoitukseni on valmistua joulukuussa 2016. Vaihtoni tapahtui Hannover Hochschulessa joka on paikallinen ammattikorkeakoulu.

Opinnot koulussa

Tein saksassa sosiaalialan opintoja lähinnä englanniksi sekä opiskelin maan kieltä muiden vaihto-opiskelijoiden kanssa. Opetus tapahtui kurssiluonteisesti ja valitsin koordinaattorin kanssa minulle sopivat kurssit. Opetus oli hyvin opiskelijoita aktivoivaa ja keskustelevaa. Keskustelut olivat hyvin ajankohtaisia ja mielenkiintoisia. Puhuimme paljon muun muassa maahanmuutosta ja siitä miten se näkyy yhteiskunnassa ja ihan katukuvassa. Ihmiset toivat myös keskusteluihin mukaan poliittisia mielipiteitään mikä oli minulle uutta. Tunneilla puhuttiin paljon myös sosiaalialanammattilaisten mahdollisuuksista vaikuttaa yhteiskunnan rakenteisiin ja sosiaalipolitiikkaan. Opiskelin muun muassa nuorisopsykologiaa ja vihreää sosiaalityötä. Oli erittäin antoisaa nähdä minkälaista opiskelu on toisessa maassa.

Opettajia pidettiin koulussa suuressa arvossa. Opiskelussa näkyi selkeästi hierarkin läsnäolo. Tunsin jonkinlaisen kuilun läsnäolon opettajien ja opiskelijoiden välillä. Teitittelyä pidettiin tärkeänä erityisesti tietyille opettajille puhuttaessa. Opettajien opiskelutaustaa pidettiin myös suuressa arvossa ja se vaikutti kunnioitukseen. En huomannut koulussa kuitenkaan epätasa-arvon toteutumista.

Itse koulurakennus sijaitsi noin puolentunnin matkan päässä asumuksestani. Koulussa oli monta kampusta ja sosiaali- ja kirkonalan kampus jossa opiskelin oli selkeästi pienin. Koulussa oli useita pienehköjä luokkia sekä isot käsityöluokat. Alueella sijaitsi myös oppilaskunnan ylläpitämä kahvila jossa tutustui uusiin ihmisiin helposti. Saman rakennuksen yläkerrassa oli kirjasto josta lainasin materiaalia tehtäviin.

Huomasin nopeasti paikallisen kielen opiskelun edut. Ihmiset eivät joko halunneet puhua englantia tai he eivät olleet siinä mitenkään erityisen hyviä. Saksan opiskelu tuntui mielekkäältä sillä sitä tarvitsi paljon arkisissa tilanteissa. Baareissa ja ravintoloissa ihmiset eivät välttämättä osanneet sanaakaan englantia ja pääsin käyttämään saksaa erityisesti näissä tilanteissa.

Oppimiskokemuksia

Matkalla opin myös paljon itsestäni. Tunsin saaneeni laajempia näkökulmia kansainvälisiin asioihin. Pystyn ajattelemaan asioita globaalimmin enkä jumitu pelkästään suomalaiseen näkökulmaan. Tein paljon paritehtäviä saksalaisen ystäväni kanssa johon tutustuin yhteisellä kurssilla. Työskentely eri kielisen henkilön kanssa oli haastavaa, mutta opin tästä hurjasti. Ystävälläni oli pahoja keskittymisvaikeuksia mikä teki työskentelystä haastavaa. Opin hänen kanssaan työskennellessä ongelmanratkaisutaitoja ja käymään avointa dialogia. Toisella kielellä asioiden esittäminen ja kirjoittaminen oli myös hyvää harjoitusta ammatillisessa mielessä.

Matkustelin paljon Saksan sisällä ja naapuri maissa. Opin aktiivisemmaksi ja sosiaalisemmaksi. Minulla syntyi myös innostus matkustelusta.

Opin paljon saksalaisesta kulttuurista. Ihmiset ovat erilaisia kuin Suomessa ja tätä oli välillä vaikea sulattaa. Stereotypia saksalaisten täsmällisyydestä piti varsin hyvin paikkansa. Ihmiset olivat ajoissa kuten myös raitiovaunut ja bussit. Julkisilla paikoilla minua tosin häiritsi ihmisten tuijotus. He jatkoivat tuijottamista vaikka olin sen huomannutkin. Moni kohtaamani saksalainen tuntui olevan myös kylmän asiallinen tai jäykkä. Tähän kuitenkin tottui nopeasti.

Koulussa opiskelijoiden ja opettajien kesken vallitsi vahva tasa-arvon aate. Kaikenlainen rasismi ja fasismi tuomittiin ankarasti. Kaupungilla oli paljon mielenosoituksia maahanmuuton puolesta ja vastaan. Suosittelen olemaan varovainen sillä yhteenotot ovat mahdollisia. Maan historiasta puhuttaessa kannattaa olla varovainen ettei sano vahingossakaan mitään asiatonta. Erityisen varovainen tulee olla ”natsi” sanan kanssa. Tämän tulisi olla itsestään selvää, mutta se on hyvä pitää mielessä.

Sain paljon ystäviä vaihto-oppilaista, mutta erityisesti paikallisista. Suosittelen tutustumaan opiskelutovereihin! Minusta on hieman typerää pyöriä ainoastaan muiden vaihto-opiskelijoiden kanssa. Siinä jää helposti kulttuuri kokematta!

Viihdyin hyvin ja aion käydä tapaamassa ystäviäni heti kun mahdollista. Suosittelen vaihtoon lähtöä kaikille sillä se avartaa maailmankuvaa huimasti!

Vinkkejä Portugaliin lähtijöille

LENNOT

Ostin menopaluulipun, jonka hinnaksi tuli vähän päälle 300 euroa. Lento oli suora Helsingistä Faroon. Portugalissa kuitenkin vihjailtiin, että halvimmalla pääsee, kun ostaa lennot esimerkiksi Lissaboniin ja ottaa sieltä bussin tai junan Faroon. Bussi -tai junalipun hinta Lissabonista Faroon on vajaa 20 euroa. Olen kuitenkin tyytyväinen, että ostin suorat lennot niin pääsin helpommalla ison laukkuni kanssa. Lensin Tap Portugalilla, jonka lennolla ruumaan menevä laukku sai painaa 23 kg ja käsimatkatavarat 8 kg.


ASUNTO

Yliopiston papereita täyttäessäni tuli vastaan kohta, mihin sai laittaa raksin jos tarvitsi asuntoa Farosta. Vain kolme viikkoa ennen lähtöäni sain kuitenkin sähköpostia, että yliopisto ei pystykään tarjoamaan asuntoa (ymmärsin, että opiskelija-asunnoista oli pulaa). Sähköpostissa kuitenkin kehoitettiin pyytämään apua asunnon etsimisessä paikallisilta opiskelijoilta, jotka työskentelivät Erasmusopiskelijoiden hyväksi. Minut oli liitetty Erasmus -sivulle Facebookissa, missä monet kyselivät asunnon perään tai ilmoittivat etsivänsä kämppistä jo löytyneeseen asuntoon. Näin minä lopulta löysin kämpän, kun vastasin kämppäkaveria etsivän saksalaisen opiskelijan viestiin. Lopulta meitä asui samassa kämpässä neljä henkilöä: Saksasta, Portugalista, Intiasta ja Suomesta.
Asunto oli oikein hyvä ja se sijaitsi lähellä keskustaa ja koulua. Meillä kaikilla oli oma huone ja jaoimme kaksi vessaa, olohuoneen, keittiön ja kaksi parveketta. Vuokra oli noin 200 euroa ja noin 30 euroa vesi -ja sähkölaskut per henkilö.
Jos menet opiskelemaan Faroon uskon, että paras keino löytää asunto on yhteiseltä vaihto-opiskelijoiden Facebook -sivulta. Monet opiskelijat tekivät myös niin, että he tulivat ensin Faroon ja asuivat hostellista ekat päivät tai viikot ja etsivät vasta sieltä päin asuntoa.
Kaikki opiskelijat löysivät lopulta asunnon, ja luulen, että sen löytäminen kävi suurelle osalle melko helposti.

RAHA

Portugalissa on eurot ja kortit käyvät maksuvälineenä monessa paikassa. Itse kannoin kuitenkin aina käteistä mukana varmuuden vuoksi. Esimerkiksi monet ravintolat ottavat mieluummin vain käteistä vastaan. Nostaessani rahaa pankkiautomaatista pankki veloitti joka kerta 0,75 euroa nostosta.
Ruoka on hieman edullisempaa kuin Suomessa, mutta esimerkiksi olut ja viini ovat huomattavasti halvempaa kuin mihin me olemme täällä Pohjoisessa tottuneet. :D
Julkisten kulkuneuvojen käyttö on myös vähän halvempaa. Esimerkiksi taksien aloitusmaksu on vähän päälle 3 euroa ja bussilippu Faron sisällä on 2,22 euroa. Matkustaessa junalla alle 25 -vuotiaan on mahdollista saada alennusta lipusta.

PUHELINLIITTYMÄ

Vaihto-opiskelijat saivat yliopistolta halutessaan WTF -liittymän sim-kortin, joka tuli aktivoida puhelinliikkeessä. Tämä liittymä maksoi joka kuukaudelta noin 7 euroa ja se tuli käydä maksamassa kerran kuukaudessa. Pieni lisämaksu tuli, jos nettiä tai puheaikaa oli käyttänyt enemmän kuin liittymä salli. Suosittelen paikallisen puhelinliittymän ottamista, elämä helpottuu huomattavasti, kun ei tarvitsi aina olla etsimässä Wi-Fi yhteyttä.

KIELITAITO

Portugalilaiset puhuvat yllättävän hyvin englantia ja englannilla voikin pärjätä maassa aivan hyvin. Myös espanjan kielitaidolla pääsee pitkälle. Jos et puhu portugalia ennestään suosittelen kuitenkin kielen alkeiden opiskelua ennen lähtöä - portugalilaiset arvostavat pientäkin kielitaitoa suuresti! Jos olet menossa juuri opiskelemaan, on myös mahdollisuus osallistua yliopiston kielikursseille. Niihin kannattaa kuitenkin ilmottautua jo Suomessa siinä vaiheessa, kun täytät yliopiston lähettämiä papereita.

Flights, getting there and getting around

Frankfurt Airport, which is the closest one to Fulda, is one of the busiest and biggest airports in Germany so you might get lucky with the flight tickets. I payed approximately 140 one way. Note, that cheap Ryanair flights fly to another airport in Frankfurt Hahn, which is 1,20h bus drive away from the center, Frankfurt Main.

From Frankfurt Main, you can get basically anywhere, including to Fulda, by train. The fast trains, ICE take approxamately one hour and cost more than the reagional trains, which take about 1,30h. Tickets can be bought easily from the ticket maschines.

From the webpage https://www.busradar.com/ you can find all the cheapest transport options, including buses and trains.

When you pay the registration fee for the university in Fulda, you get a student card which will be your number one thing getting around. It will grant you free travels in the whole state of Hessen, meaning besides Fulda, also the bigger cities like Frankfurt. Note, that while using trains, the student card grants a ticket only to the regional trains, not the faster ICE trains.

In fulda you can get basically anywhere around the main area by walking. Renting a bike would be a fun thing too.

Living, housing

I booked a room in a student flat, which cost me 260 euros. It was 60 euros more than what the locals payed. However it included water, heating and internet(no wifi). Internet was that slow, that often I stayed at the university to do my homework. So I personally recommend, that you buy an internet stick or explore other options.

The room was okay and had furniture plus a towel and one set of bed linen in it. It also had its own sink. The kitchen however was dirty and didn´t have much equipment in it. This varied among the flats, some were okay, others not so much. The shower water was a problem for all though, it kept changing from burning hot to ice cold.

Some other students had looked their rooms individually and were living in much nicer flats with less money. In Fulda there are a lot of students living in shared apartments so it is very possible to find a very nice flat which is cheaper, and closer to the university. If you decide to explore this option, I recommend to do it as early as possible because there are always new students looking for rooms.

On a positive note, the roommates were awesome and there were only students living in the whole building. The area was beautiful, near the famous Dome, about 20 min bus drive away from the school, but 5-10 minutes walking distance from the center.

Phone contract

All of us used a prepaid sim cards, which you can buy from any supermarket. Tutors will assist you right away with that, upon arrival.

Money

All of us internationals got a free youth bank account from a german bank, with the assistance of our tutors of course. It was easy because we made a contract where the rent money would go off of it every month, automatically.

I recommend to have cash, always. In comparison to Finland, there are many stores where you can pay in cash only and not too many Otto´s. Besides, if you use a different Otto than your own bank, you pay some money.

Germany overall is cheaper than Finland. Fulda however, not so much as some other bigger cities. Note that water is never free while eating out, and usually very expencive. Cosmetics and drugs are notably cheaper than in Finland and the selection is much better. So if you have little room in your suitcase, you might leave out the shampoos etc. and buy them from Dm.

Help...

I suggest, that you be active and be in contact with the international officce of Fulda Hochschule in case of any questions, fears or if you just want to ask advice where to find a flat. Everyone at the school was super helpful and always so understanding. I knew people, who had been in touch with the school and asking about rooms and internships for a long time before they came to Fulda.
Also, throughout the whole stay, the tutors and professors would help us with the silliest things. So your support network will be huge.

My Experiences in Fulda

My international exchange took place in Fulda University of Applied Sciences, department of Social Work. The course was International Course in Social work, which included subjects like Intercultural Competencies and Communications, European Studies, learning about Good Practices in Germany (visiting different institutions) and an internship.

First Impressions

My international exchange in Fulda, Germany started a few days later than planned due to acute illness and having being pulled off from the airplane in Norway and having sent to the hospital. It was stressful because I was not able to inform the tutors who were expecting my arrival. In addition I was worried about the hospital costs. To my relief everything worked out-the hospital in Norway was free for me, as I am a citizen of Europe and I even managed to get a new flight ticket without paying, thanks to the amazing workers at Air Baltic.

The tutors picked me up from the train station in Fulda and brought me straight to my new room, in a 6 room apartment. My first impressions were disappointing as the flat was old and not clean, the kitchen was dirty and empty. Later it also came out, that the shower water kept changing from burning hot to ice cold during the whole time we were taking showers. I had expected better conditions because of the pictures I had seen online. I also figured that for 260 euros they would offer more. This is something I struggled with for at least a month. Later on I managed to change my state of mind and not care about these things. I realized that my time there is so short and it was such a waste of my energy and time to be bothered by such issues.

The next day I met the other exchange students in Social Work program - a 65 year old lady from San Francisco, four 22-year old girls from the USA as well, a girl from Australia and one from South-Korea. The American girls were loud and talked constantly, which was quite scary for me, being an introvert and all. I was also worried, that I am going to be the only one, except the girl from South-Korea, who speaks English as a second language.

The beginning of the studies I considered to be slow. Reason being that I had been told by my other German friends how difficult and more structured the German education system is compared to Finnish. This was also one of the reasons why I applied to Fulda-to challenge myself and discover new ways of learning.

Therefore I can say that although I do not find German culture much different to what I am used to and I had been there several times before, the begging of my semester was mentally surprisingly challenging. I definitely had not expected that since I have considered myself to be very well adapting due to many travels. I now think, that my expectations back then were too high, in regards to the apartment, the school and also meeting new people and the study group.

The Studies and the University

The studies picked up after about one month of my arrival. We were actually explained, that the program was structured the way it was to give us time to settle in, discover the city and people and travel around.

The professors spoke clear English and are all professionals in their field. The classes were informative and structured in a way that there is a balance between teachers talking and the opinions and remarks of the students.

The university itself was breathtaking. The area on which the university complex was, was spacious and green, it had everything one could wish for. The library was huge, with big rooms for group meetings, rooms for computers and space for individual learning. Plus there were other special buildings for learning. The canteen was also spacious and had different sections for variety of diets. There was another cafeteria on the area, where smaller groups could hang and where university parties were sometimes held. Outside there were ball courts for sport, hammocks, benches for hanging out. I felt that in regards to my studies and motivation I opened up in a whole new level. I felt driven to learn and give my best. Still I am trying to figure out, what were the reasons for that and how can I keep it up here in Finland.

My internship took place in a project, where young socially troubled unemployed girls would get vocational training working with animals in a wild park. As the internship was once a week and the girls didn´t speak any English, I felt that my contribution in regards to communicating with the girls was not the best it could have been. I learned that I need to be more confident and throw myself into situations more freely. I speak A2 level German and I could have practiced more with the girls. My supervisor told me, that although spoken language was minimal, I still connected with the girls by using unspoken language and just being there. Still I feel that I held back. This is something I need to develop.

We also visited several different institutions, not only in Fulda but in Frankfurt as well. One of the most remarkable places we got to witness was the Eastside drug facility in Frankfurt. Reason being, it is one of its kind in Europe- drug abusers have injection rooms where they are allowed in controlled settings, to use drugs. It helps to prevent overdose and criminal activities on the streets- and what we heard from the professional workers of Eastside, it seems to be working.

Social Life and Free Time

In the beginning I felt lonely much of the time. Most of the time I would spend with the Americans, who I felt I was forced to spend my time with and I had nothing in common with. The reason for that was the fact that our international social work study group started our orientation and also the studies one month earlier than all the other students due to the semester times in America. In that sense I find the program poorly executed- our seven people group was totally excluded from the other international students, who had their orientation and activities all together later on, in a large group with people from different departments. This is something we took up with the professors as well and they promised to try to consider it next time.

Later, when all the German students joined the school and some also our study group, the environment and the general vibe changed completely. I guess all of us from our social work group had expected to get to know more German people and not to spend every day for one month only with the 6 other people. The big group connected well and we spent some amazing times together. I got really close with 4 German girls, who I spent most of my time there with.

I visited many different cities, where I have German friends already from the old times. We also had a field trip to Berlin, which lasted for 4 days. All of the exchange students from the social work department and some of the German students took part in the trip. We got to visit the main turist sites like the Berlin wall and the Bundestag, plus we had some free time and all the evenings free. It was the perfect way to connect with all the other students and also the teachers.

Towards the end, I also realized how close we really had gotten with our small 7 people group of internationals. There were times when I just wanted to escape and not see some of the people at all. But actually we made strong bonds for lifetime, having gone through everything together and supporting each other in all situations.

To sum it up…

The beginning was unexpectedly challenging but after a short time of settling in, I was draining for the day of my departure home. I learned that giving also the most challenging people a chance is totally worth it. There is always something that you will gain. I also realized how much more I appreciate a more free society than for example Finland has. There are no major differences in the culture that I could bring out, however all the small things that made me feel like I am trusted as a citizenship or as a person made me feel good.

I made good friends and built useful networks. Although Fulda itself was a small catholic town, with an alternative scene of about 20-30 individuals, where I could have never seen myself enjoying my time, I would go again in a heartbeat. It is green with romantic architecture and smiley people.

Vaihdossa Portugalissa

Olen Sara ja olin vaihdossa Faron yliopistossa Portugalissa syyslukukauden. Minulle oli heti selvää, että haluan tehdä ulkomaan harjoittelun Portugalissa, sillä halusin päästä maahan missä voin käyttää portugalia. Alunperin olin menossa tekemään  sinne työharjoittelua, mutta sain kuulla, että heillä olisi tarjottavana harjoittelupaikkaa vasta kevääksi. Onnekseni sain kuitenkin kuulla, että minun on myös mahdollisuus mennä tekemään opiskelijavaihto harjoittelun sijaan. Nyt olen enemmän kuin tyytyväinen, että olin juuri opiskelemassa siellä. 

Olá!

Ennen lähtöäni paikallinen opiskelija, joka hoiti Erasmus-opiskeljoiden asioita, liitti minut vaihto-opiskelijoiden yhteiseen Facebook-ryhmään. Sen kautta tutustuin saksalaiseen tyttöön, josta tuli myöhemmin myös kämppikseni Portugalissa. Tämän sivun kautta sain myös paljon erilaista tietoa vaihtoon liittyen. Minusta oli hyvin jännittävää lähteä yksin maahan, jossa en ollut koskaan ollut ja erityisesti mennä opiskelemaan vieraalla kielellä. Onneksi minulla oli vain kolme kurssia suoritettavana, mutta silti mietin miten tulen selviytymään niistä portugaliksi.

Portugaliin oli tullut yli 100 vahto-opiskelijaa eri maista ja sain hyvin nopeasti kavereita, mikä auttoi myös kotiutumisessa. Moni heistä ei puhunut ollenkaan portugalin kieltä ja monilla kursseilla olikin mahdollisuus suorittaa tehtävät englanniksi. Tämä helpotti myös minua, sillä pystyin suorittamaan muun muassa vaikeimmat kirjoitustehtävät englanniksi. Pyrin silti käyttämään mahdollisimman paljon portugalia, sillä varsinkin opettajat arvostivat sitä hyvin paljon. Olin yllättynyt kuinka hyvin Portugalissa ihmiset osaavat englantia, sillä luulin heidän kielitaitonsa olevan suunnilleen samaa tasoa kuin Espanjassa, missä ihmiset tuntuvat osaavan englantia vain hyvin vähän.

Faron yliopistolla on kaksi eri kampusta, jotka ovat nimeltään Penha ja Gampelas. Itse opiskelin Penhan kampuksessa. Minun kaikki kolme kurssia olivat saman ryhmän kanssa, joten oli helppo päästä tutustumaan myös paikallisiin opiskelijoihin paremmin. Jokaisella kurssillani oli myös pari muuta vaihtopiskelijaa. Opiskelu oli hieman erilaista kuin Suomessa. Luokkahuoneet olivat paljon pienempiä ja opiskelijoita oli vähemmän. Tunneilla opiskeljat osallistuvat aktiivisesti keskusteluihin ja vaikutti siltä, että opiskelijoiden ja opettajan suhde oli paljon tuttavallisempi kuin mitä olen Suomessa tottunut. Erona huomasin myös sen, että Portugalissa ei tuntien aikana saanut käyttää puhelimia tai syödä omia eväitä. Opettajat tekivät myös paljon mustiinpanoja taululle ja käyttivät hyvin vähän elektroniikkaa opetuksessa.

Portugalissa ihmiset ovat hyvin ystävällisiä, vieraanvaraisia ja aina valmiita auttamaan. Oli helppo sopeutua tällaiseen kulttuuriin ja tulla osaksi sitä. Koska Portugaliin oli tullut monesta eri maasta opiskelijoita, pääsin myös tutustumaan moneen eri kulttuurin ja heidän tapoihinsa ja näin opin myös ymmärtämään kulttuurillisia eroja. Vaihto Portugalissa oli hyvin rikastuttava kokemus ja voisin suositella sitä kaikille. Tunsin saavani paljon itseluottamusta, rohkeutta, kielitaitoni kehittyi sekä sain paljon uusia ystäviä.
